Nonlinear analysis techniques for shear band formation at high strain-rates

چکیده
One of the most striking manifestations of instability in solid mechanics is the localiza-tion of shear strain into narrow bands during high speed, plastic deformations of metals. According to one theory, the formation of shear bands is attributed to eeective strain-softening response, which results at high strain rates as the net outcome of the innuence of thermal softening on the, normally, strain-hardening response of metals. Our objective is to review some of the insight obtained by applying nonlinear analysis techniques on simple models of nonlinear partial diierential equations simulating this scenario for instability. First, we take up a simple system, intended as a paradigm, that describes isothermal shear deformations of a material exhibiting strain softening and strain-rate sensitivity. As it turns out, for moderate amounts of strain softening strain-rate sensitivity exerts a dissipa-tive eeect and stabilizes the motion. However, once a threshold is exceeded, the response becomes unstable and shear strain localization occurs. Next, we present extensions of these results to situations where explicit thermal eeects are taken into account.

An Enhanced Viscoplastic Constitutive Model for Semi-Solid Materials to Analyze Shear Localization
Semi-solid materials undergo strain localization and shear band formation as a result of granular nature of semi-solid deformation. In the present study, to analyze the shear localization, a unified viscoplastic constitutive model was developed for the homogeneous flow. Then, a linearized analysis of the stability performed by examining the necessary condition for the perturbation growth. For t...

A series of experiments is described in which the local temperature and local strain are measured during the formation of an adiabatic shear band in a low alloy structural steel (HY-100). The specimen employed consists of a short thin-walled tube and the required rapid deformation rates are imposed by loading the specimen in a torsional Kolsky bar (split-Hopkinson bar). The local temperature is...
متن کاملLinear analysis of melt band formation by simple shear
Recent experiments by Holtzman et al. [2003] demonstrate that partially molten aggregates of many mantle materials undergoing simple shear (from ∼ 100−500% strain) will spontaneously develop localized melt-rich bands. These bands develop at small strains but persist at low angles to the plane of shear (∼ 15– 20) even at large shear strains. The melt-rich bands also appear to form localized weak...
متن کاملRate dependence of serrated flow in a metallic glass
Plastic deformation of metallic glasses at low temperatures is known to be highly localized to narrow shear bands. It is generally believed that shear-band formation is very weakly dependent on the strain rate or temperature. However, some reports suggest that the strain rate affects shear-band formation. Mukai et al. reported that the density of shear bands in a Pd-based bulk metallic glass in...
